Luís Filipe Ângelo Rodrigues Fernandes, known as Luís Filipe (born 14 June 1979 in Cantanhede, Coimbra), is a Portuguese footballer who plays for S.C. Olhanense.
He plays as a defender or midfielder, always on the right side. Not blessed with many technical skills or speed, he compensates with hustle.
Luís Filipe started playing professional football as a right winger with Académica de Coimbra, and had a small abroad stint with Spain's Atlético Madrid, spent entirely with the B team. Unsettled, he moved to Sporting Clube de Braga, blossoming as a first division player.
His development led to a 2001 transfer to Sporting Clube de Portugal. Opportunities were scarce, and he subsequently reconverted to right defender, in the molds of international Miguel, upon his loan with União de Leiria. In 2004–05 he represented C.S. Marítimo and subsequently returned to Braga.
In the beginning of August 2007, Filipe signed a €500.000, four-year deal with Sport Lisboa e Benfica,[1] with also right-back João Pereira going the other way.
After one unsuccessful year in Lisbon, he was deemed surplus to requirements by new boss Quique Flores, moving alongside Nuno Assis to UEFA Champions League challenger Vitória Sport Clube, in Guimarães, on loan (Assis permanently). The Minho side retained the option to buy the player at the end of the season, but it was not activated.
In the 2009–10 campaign, as Benfica won the league, Luis Filipe's output consisted of 23 minutes in the 1–0 home win against F.C. Porto; as the club reached the last eight in the UEFA Europa League, he added a further three appearances.
Filipe appeared in three league games in 2010–11 (one win, one draw and one loss), with manager Jorge Jesus resting several starters in rounds which brought a Europa League fixture the following week, as Benfica fared better in that competition and reached the semifinals. In mid-May 2011, he left the club as his contract expired and was not renewed.[2] Two months later, he signed with S.C. Olhanense.[3]
